Opened in 2010 in the former Manchester and Salford Children’s Mission building, the Gas Lamp is easy to overlook from the street: an impressive frontage hides a small doorway and a staircase down to a basement bar. Inside, it is starkly distinctive, with Victorian glazed-brick walls, minimal decoration and a simple wooden bar running along the rear wall. Four handpumps serve a changing cask line-up with an emphasis on the pub’s own Pomona Island beers and other smaller, characterful breweries rather than familiar national brands. Whisky is another strength, including a regular “Whisky of the Month” and bottles from Chorlton Whisky. Pomona Island’s brewery is based in Weaste, Salford. Card payments only at the bar.
