Family run, 18th century former coaching inn which has been extensively refurbished with a good balance of traditional touches and contemporary twists. The bar and dining area has a relaxed atmosphere with stone floors and a large fireplaces at either end of the room. Service is very welcoming. Charles Dickens is reputed to have stayed here. There is a very good separate function room with its own bar and an attractive beer garden to the rear. The pub has eight well-equipped, ensuite bedrooms. Five handpumps dispense a range of Thwaites real ales.
